How to Use a Podcast Player to Promote Your Podcast and Get More Listeners

Here are some ways to effectively use a podcast player to promote your podcast to your website visitors.

2-Click Play

I call it this 2-Click Play.

  • 1st click gets them to your website (from a link in an email, social, twitter, etc).

  • 2nd click should be on the "Play" button of your podcast player, to start listening to one of your podcast.

That's literally how simple you need to make it for your website visitors if you wish to get the most number of your website visitors to sample your podcast.

But instead, a lot of podcasters make it quite hard for their visitors to listen to their podcast.

For instance, they might use just single-episode audio players on individual WordPress Posts.

That means, for me to to listen to a bunch of episodes, or even see what they're about, I have to click over to multiple posts. And that could mean a lot of clicking around.

So why not use a full "Feed Player" - or Playlist - for your entire podcast? All in one place?

See my own podcast playlist below.

See how it serves as a "Table of Contents" for my entire podcast, so you can quickly see the titles of all the episodes.

‚Äč

You can quickly and easily sample a few of them, check out the content, and see if it's a right fit for you!

Player on a Page

Check out the screenshot above showing just Page 1 of about 10 pages of stats of my podcast downloads from actual websites where I've placed a player.

Around 30,000+ downloads overall as of date - all of them directly because of placing an audio player on a page on a web site (I use CoolCastPlayer.com, by the way, which is my own plugin).

(This was from actually a couple of years ago, and I'm unable to get the full stats right now because my hosting company has changed the reporting effective date because of a change in their systems.)

So, I didn't really do anything special.

I promoted my web site through social media and content marketing. And I got a bonus 30,000+ downloads thanks to having an audio player on my web site, prominently displayed, so that a visitor to my web site, can click play - and in just a couple of quick minutes, listen and sample what I have to say.

These downloads don't include any of my Apple Podcasts feed or any other sources. JUST my web sites. AND it's just the 1st page out of 18 total pages of stats showing episode plays from a web page. So don't forget your web site visitors - if you promote your audio player front-and-center on your site, you can get a lot of your visitors to check out your podcast - and if your content is a match for them, I'm willing to bet money that many of them will go on to subscribe to your show via Apple Podcasts or other directories. Sure, it's not "hundreds of thousands" of downloads, it's not a "majority" of my downloads - in fact, it's a small but relevant and impactful minority.

So regardless of what the general stats say about how not many people consume podcasts from a web page, don't underestimate or ignore your web site as one of the best ways to introduce your podcast to a new audience. A player on a web site is more suitable for "introducing" someone to your podcast - not necessarily for long-term consumption. Introduce on your site, lead them to subscribe on a mobile app on your actual show.

Promote your web site to cold and luke-warm traffic, like ad traffic and social-spraying content marketing, so you can cookie/pixel them for later retargeting, promote your brand, show them your face, maybe connect with them with a personable video, offer them your lead-magnet and get them to maybe give your their email id, etc etc. But once they're on your list, promote Apple Podcast and Stitcher and Google Play links to those already on your "list", because they don't need to be "convinced" or "converted" any more about the value that you provide. Just my $0.02.

1) "Podroll": Put your podcast feed player at the bottom of every post on your site. Just like a "Blogroll" would point to other blogs and other related sites. Do that with your own sites, for your own podcast. I call it a "Podroll". For example, see one of my episode posts at https://subscribeme.fm/start-with-the-pricing-table/ . At the bottom of that post, you'll see the full feed player for my entire podcast. So when you promote one episode on social, and someone lands on your page, they can gently be introduced to your other episodes as well. I've used a service called Quuu to promote an article on my web site, that had a podcast episode, followed by my "Podroll" at the end of the page, which has gotten me a heck of a lot of downloads and a few of them went on to subscribe, and I know that because when I published my next episode, it got a lot more downloads right off the bat than the previous one. So that's how I know some of them subscribed.

2) "If This Then That": No, not talking about IFTTT. I'm talking about something similar to what Amazon does: "Those who bought this product also bought that product". Similarly, within the show-notes for a particular podcast, you could embed the podcast episode players of other episodes that the visitor to this page might find useful. So cross-promote other episodes on the pages of related episode posts. Don't simply link to another page - that's not the point. Like, listen to the episode where I talked about Media hosting, by clicking here. And click here to listen to this other episode I did about YouTube. No, don't do that. Don't put your visitor through link-clicking hell and make them jump through hoops. Put all of the episodes you are referring to in an episode, right there, on that same page, withIN that post, so they can keep listening.

3) "Oh By The Way": If you use a podcast player like CoolCastPlayer.com , you can install it on one site, and then embed your individual players, or even your entire feed player, on your other web sites. Totally different domains. Embed the feed player on all your "thank you" pages - like the pages your subscribers see after they sign up to your newsletter, or for your lead magnet (free report), after they've purchased your product or service. On all of those pages, you can say "Thank you for signing up for my newsletter. Oh, by the way, I have a free podcast about this same topic - check it out below." Insert feed player right there. BOOM! Free publicity.

https://subscribeme.fm/about-ravi-jayagopal/

http://premiumpodcasting.com/coming-soon/

4) "Landing Page Love": You can embed your podcast episodes and your feed player on a number of different types of landing pages on your site. You can do it at the bottom of special offer pages, sales page, and even on "Coming Soon" pages of new sites you're creating. Instead of "wasting" precious real-estate on various such pages, even on different domains where you don't have your podcast player installed, you can promote your podcast. And the cool thing is, a podcast is a very low-key way to prove you are an authority, and a podcast generally lowers their guard, because a podcast is still conceived as a unaggressive, non-promotional medium - for the most part - so far, anyway ;-). See how I've embedded my podcast player on a "coming soon" page of a new course I'm launching, at PodcastingConfessions.com .

5) "Above The Fold": Put a feed player bang on your home page. Or on the podcast main page of your site. ABOVE the fold. Don't make your web site visitors click through endlessly to get to your players. If you have a feed player right there, they can browse through all of your episodes right there, maybe sample a few episodes real quick and know right away if your show is for them. If it is, then obviously, you're going to have "Subscribe" buttons right there below the player. So they'll know where to go to subscribe. And of course, you're also going to be telling them how to subscribe on your podcast.

6) "2-Click Play": A player on a page is the absolute fastest way to send someone from a social media link, to sampling your podcast. Not everyone will know how to navigate through iTunes in a web browser. They may not know how to subscribe on Android, even if you send them a subscribeonandroid.com link. Instead, send all social traffic, ad-traffic and cold traffic to your web site. Everyone knows how to click play on a player on a page, especially if it is big and nice and pretty. So rule of thumb: Social and ad traffic to your web site. Newsletter subscribers directly to Apple Podcasts or Subscribe on Android links. Also, when you send them to your web site, you can cookie them with a retargeting pixel so you can promote ads to them later on Google or Facebook. And on your web site, you can promote your lead-magnet and get them to give you their email id, promote other products and services, promote your brand, post your entire podcast feed so that they can see that you know what you're talking about, you can promote some of your best YouTube videos so that they can put a face to your name, and can connect with you better. And even if they don't sign up for your email list, you already have accomplished the next best thing - cookieing them with a Facebook pixel. So now, you know who has NOT signed up for your list, and you can continue promoting your lead magnet and other things to them in the future. And you can also promote your next podcast episode, because you know they already went to your site once.

7) "A World Awaits You": No, not being cheesy - I mean it, like, literally. An entire world of Android users awaits you. Ignore those who tell you to ignore marketing your web site, ignore people who say that hardly anyone listens to audio on a web page. Ignore those who tell you to focus only on Apple users and promote primarily your Apple Podcasts URL. There is an entire world of Android users out there, who are severely underserved right now. A majority of them don't even know about podcasts, because Google still doesn't have a native podcast player that comes pre-installed. Podcast consumption got a huge spike when Apple introduced the native "Apple Podcasts" app on iOS devices. So whenever Google gets a clue and introduces a native app, you can expect millions of Android users around the world to be introduced to podcasting. So don't forget to promote both Apple Podcasts and Android subscription links on your site. Simply use the fantastic free service SubscribeOnAndroid.com to create a custom link for your podcast. And then use a pretty link to redirect yoursite.com/android to the long URL. And similarly, use yoursite.com/itunes or yoursite.com/apple to redirect to the apple podcasts url.

8) "Signature Sauce": Promote your podcast in your email signature links. And don't just create one signature link and auto-add that to all of your emails. Create multiple signature links. Use a tool like AutoHotKey (free, windows) or your Mac equivalent to create hotkeys where you just type one word and a bunch of text is inserted into your editor. So create multiple signatures. Rotate your signatures. Promote a specific episode based on context of the email. Mix it up. Spice it up. If you go back and forth with the same person 3 times, you could use 3 different signatures after your email, all by just typing in one word.

9) "Embedder Extraordinaire": A lot of times, when you interview someone on your show, especially if they're well-known or some kind of a celebrity, then when you publish the interview, you're probably going to let them know that the episode has now been published, and you will probably give them your iTunes or Android link. And someone would smartly put the episode on their web site and send the link to that post to the guest, and ask them if they wouldn't mind promoting it to their audience. A big problem with that is, if the guest has a big email list that they've carefully and painstakingly built over the years, they're not simply going to email their precious list that they appeared on your show and send the list your web site link. Why would they do that, when they probably have so many things of their own to promote, their own podcast, their own products and services and webinars and so on? The last thing they probably want to do is to send everyone to your site where you may cookie them, or offer a lead magnet and siphon off their hardearned list. So instead, you could send them one line of code in the email, and tell them that they could simply put the code on their site and your podast interview with them would show up on their web site. And they don't have to install anything. If they can embed a YouTube video on their site, this works the same way. The code even looks similar to that. A simple one line of text. And when you use a podcast player that has this "Embed" feature, like - hint, hint - CoolCastPlayer.com, you can provide your guests with this embed code so that they don't have to worry about sending their precious traffic to your web site. They can embed the code on a page on their own site, it's your file that's still playing, so you get credit for all those downloads in your podcast host's stats, and they have kept their audience within their own site.

10) "Embed Exchange": You could do a promo exchange with another podcaster - where they embed your podcast episode, or even feed player, on one of their thank-you pages - like their email list signup thank you page. And you do the same for them. Simply give them your embed code. If they're not using CoolCastPlayer (shame on them), then simply ask them for their episode URL, or even their RSS feed URL, and because you use CoolCastPlayer, it will take you 30 seconds to whip up a player using their podcast file, or feed, and you can them embed that on a thank-you page on your site. Even if you don't use CoolCastPlayer (shame on you), use whatever plugin you have, or use the ugly default WordPress player.

11) "Don't Waste It": So think about where else you have "wasted" real-estate on your pages. Side-bars. Footers. Signatures. Thank-you pages. Sales pages. Signup pages. Landing pages. Checkout thank you pages. Member's area welcome pages. Sticky blog post. Where else you have a visitor's attention. A lot of people waste these opportunities by saying nothing once the intended action is complete. Keep the engagement going. Listening to an episode of your podcast from your web site will increase your website's stickiness - which Google will appreciate (make sure you're using Google Analytics). I'm sure if you are mindful of this, you will find a lot more opportunities on your site to promote your full feed player, or an in-context episode relevant to the action that your visitor just completed.

Sorry about the links - can't show you an example without showing you an example :-)

And finally, drumrolls please...

The absolutely most powerful way to promote your podcast, is to not promote it at all! WTF, you say? I know! I explain it in detail in my free report where I go into other incredibly powerful ways to promote your podcast, build an audience, reach your audience wherever they are, how to shout it to the world without coming across as a spammer, how to read the minds of your potential audience and know exactly what they're thinking and create content so insanely tailor-made for them, that when you tell them about it, they will feel like you create
